What ovulation pain can feel like
Ovulation pain, also called mittelschmerz, is discomfort that may occur on one side of the lower abdomen around the middle of a menstrual cycle. It can feel like a cramp, twinge or sharper ache and may last from a short time to a day or so. The side can vary between cycles. A symptom diary can show whether the pain follows a predictable pattern, which helps a clinician distinguish it from other pelvic causes.
Ways to ease the discomfort
Place a warm pack over the lower abdomen, take a warm bath and allow time for gentle rest. If you can take them safely, an over-the-counter pain reliever may help; follow the label and check with a pharmacist if you are pregnant, trying to conceive, have stomach or kidney problems, or take other medicines. Gentle movement is reasonable if it feels comfortable. If pain recurs, record its side, timing, severity, bleeding and associated symptoms. Recurrent pain may need evaluation for conditions such as endometriosis or ovarian cysts.
When to seek care
Seek urgent care for sudden severe pelvic pain, fainting, marked dizziness, heavy bleeding, fever, repeated vomiting or a positive pregnancy test with pain. Arrange a medical review if discomfort is new, worsening, lasts beyond the expected mid-cycle window, interrupts daily activities or comes with pain during sex, unusual discharge or bleeding between periods. These features can have causes other than ovulation pain.
Questions for your doctor
Could the pattern fit ovulation pain, or should we check for another pelvic cause? Which pain relievers are suitable for me? Would an examination or ultrasound help? What symptoms should prompt urgent review?
