How to reduce fatigue

Short answer
To reduce fatigue, protect sleep, pace activity, eat regularly, drink enough, and investigate persistent tiredness.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Pacing
- Increase activity gradually.
- Useful record
- Sleep, energy, mood, and medicines.
Why energy can fall
Fatigue is more than feeling sleepy; it can involve low energy, reduced concentration, or effort that feels unusually difficult. Poor sleep, stress, infection, dehydration, low mood, alcohol, and an irregular routine can contribute. Persistent fatigue can also occur with anaemia, coeliac disease, kidney disease, or other health problems, so the duration and associated symptoms guide assessment.
Build energy carefully
Keep a consistent sleep and wake routine, limit screens and stimulating drinks near bedtime, and use daylight and gentle movement during the day. Break demanding tasks into manageable periods with planned rests, increasing activity gradually rather than alternating overexertion with long recovery. Eat balanced meals, drink regularly, and avoid relying on alcohol or highly caffeinated drinks for energy. Record sleep, activity, mood, medicines, and symptoms to share at an appointment.
When tiredness needs review
Arrange a medical review when fatigue persists, interferes with work or daily care, or comes with breathlessness, paleness, fever, persistent thirst, weight change, low mood, or disrupted sleep. Seek urgent help for chest pain, severe breathlessness, confusion, fainting, sudden weakness, or thoughts of self-harm.
Questions for your doctor
Explain when the fatigue started and how it affects function. Ask whether your symptoms, medicines, sleep, diet, or mood suggest blood tests or another assessment.

Questions people ask
Should I exercise when I feel fatigued?
Gentle activity may help, but stay within your ability and reduce the load if symptoms worsen or recovery becomes difficult.
Can dehydration make me tired?
Yes. Fluid loss can reduce wellbeing and concentration; drink regularly and seek advice if vomiting, diarrhoea, or illness is causing fluid loss.
