What Should You Know About Red Stretch Marks?

Short answer

Red stretch marks are early stretch marks that may look pink, red, purple, or reddish-brown as skin stretches and supporting fibres change.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

They can appear when the body changes size quickly, including during pregnancy, puberty, muscle gain, or weight change. They are a type of scar-like change in the deeper skin, not a sign that the surface is dirty or poorly cared for. Colour often becomes less noticeable with time, although the lines may remain visible.

What red stretch marks mean

The red colour reflects early inflammation and visible blood vessels near the area of skin change. Marks may feel slightly itchy, tight, or sensitive while they are developing, but many cause no physical symptoms. They commonly occur on the abdomen, breasts, hips, thighs, buttocks, upper arms, or lower back. Different marks on the same body can be at different stages, so some may be red while older ones look pale or silvery.

Family tendency, hormonal changes, skin elasticity, and the speed of stretching can all influence whether they develop. Corticosteroid medicines applied to the skin or taken by mouth can also contribute in some people. A clinician can check an unusual pattern or widespread change and review medicines that may be relevant.

What you can do

Moisturiser can ease dryness and itching, but creams and oils do not reliably remove established stretch marks. Avoid vigorous scratching, which can irritate the skin. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, check with a clinician before using a retinoid cream; these products are not suitable in every situation.

If the appearance bothers you, a dermatologist or qualified aesthetic clinician can discuss timing, skin tone, mark colour, and texture before suggesting treatment. Options may include microneedling, fractional laser treatment, RF microneedling, or carboxytherapy. These approaches aim to stimulate remodelling in the skin, and improvement is gradual rather than immediate. Results vary, and treatment can cause temporary redness, swelling, pigment changes, or irritation.

When to seek care

Arrange a medical assessment if marks appear suddenly without an obvious period of body change, spread rapidly, become broad and deeply coloured, or occur with easy bruising, muscle weakness, facial changes, or other new symptoms. Those features can point to a medicine effect or a hormonal condition that needs evaluation.

Seek prompt care for skin that is hot, increasingly painful, very swollen, oozing, or accompanied by fever, since those features are not typical of uncomplicated stretch marks.

Questions for your doctor

You could ask: Are these stretch marks or another skin change? Could any medicine or hormonal issue be contributing? Which option suits the marks’ age, colour, location, and my skin tone? What temporary reactions should I plan for, and how long should I wait before judging the result?
