What should you know about red spots around hair follicles?

Follicle-centred bumps may follow shaving, tight clothing, sweating, or rubbing. Folliculitis is inflammation around a follicle and can produce red, tender, or pus-tipped bumps. Ingrown hairs are more likely where hair is removed and may form a firm spot as a hair curls back into skin. Acne can also affect hair follicles, especially on the face, chest, or back. A breast lump is not implied by this appearance, and a spot does not identify its cause by itself.

Note whether the spots are painful, itchy, pus-filled, spreading, or linked to a new product or hair-removal routine. Recurrent facial flushing with bumps may fit rosacea, while mouth-area bumps can have another pattern.

Pause shaving, waxing, and picking until the skin settles. Wash gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and choose loose, breathable clothing. Avoid fragranced oils, harsh scrubs, and sharing razors. If shaving is needed later, use clean equipment, shaving gel, and light strokes in the direction of growth. A clinician can distinguish folliculitis, acne, and ingrown hairs and choose treatment suited to the site.

Arrange a medical review if spots keep returning, become painful, develop pus, leave scars, or do not improve after removing the trigger. Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading redness, marked swelling, fever, or feeling unwell, because these can signal a deeper skin infection.
