Short answer

Red eye with discharge may be caused by conjunctivitis, allergy, or irritation, and the colour and texture of discharge help guide assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the discharge may indicate

Watery discharge commonly accompanies viral irritation or allergy. Thick, sticky discharge can occur with bacterial conjunctivitis, while stringy mucus may appear with allergy or dryness. Crusting on waking does not identify the cause by itself. Itching, sneezing, or symptoms in both eyes can support an allergic explanation; pain, light sensitivity, or vision change needs closer assessment.

What you can do

Gently clean the eyelids with clean water and a fresh cloth, using a separate part of the cloth for each eye. Wash hands before and after care, avoid rubbing, and do not share towels, cosmetics, or eye drops. Remove contact lenses and leave them out while discharge and redness continue. Do not use leftover antibiotic drops because the wrong treatment can delay the right assessment.

When to seek care

Seek prompt care for significant eye pain, strong light sensitivity, reduced or blurred vision, swelling around the eye, a foreign body, chemical exposure, or symptoms after an eye injury. Contact-lens wearers should obtain timely advice for a red eye with discharge because the cornea can be affected. Urgent assessment is needed for sudden vision change or severe pain.

Questions for your doctor

What does the discharge suggest in my case? Do I need an examination or a prescription? When can I restart contact lenses, and how should I clean or replace eye products?
