Recursive Partitioning Analysis (RPA): What to Know

RPA is a form of clinical decision support. It sorts people into broad groups using details such as age, general physical function, the state of cancer outside the brain, and the number or pattern of brain metastases. The result is a way to describe overall outlook and compare treatment approaches within a clinical context. It is a group-level tool, not a personal prediction or a diagnosis.

A clinician may discuss RPA alongside scans, pathology, symptoms, previous treatment, and the location of each brain metastasis. Cancers such as Breast Cancer, Lung Cancer, and Melanoma can spread to the brain, but the original cancer and its biology still matter when care is planned.

Your oncology team may use the assessment to structure a conversation about local treatment, medicines, symptom control, and goals of care. Options can include Stereotactic Radiosurgery, Whole Brain Radiotherapy, or Brain Tumour Surgery, depending on the scan findings and your overall health. Bring a list of medicines, previous cancer treatments, and new neurological symptoms to the appointment.

Ask which features placed you in a particular group and whether newer information changes the discussion. RPA should be interpreted with current clinical judgement rather than used alone to choose treatment.

Seek urgent medical help for a first seizure, sudden weakness or numbness, new trouble speaking, severe or rapidly worsening headache, repeated vomiting, confusion, fainting, or a major change in vision or balance. These symptoms can reflect pressure or irritation in the brain and need prompt assessment, regardless of any RPA grouping.
