What should you know about recurring nosebleed?

Short answer

Recurring nosebleeds usually reflect irritation, dryness, inflammation, or minor injury inside the nose; use correct first aid, record the pattern, and seek assessment when bleeding is heavy, prolonged, or frequent.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What repeated bleeding can mean

The delicate blood vessels at the front of the nose can bleed after dry air, nose picking, forceful blowing, an impact, or frequent use of nasal sprays. Allergic Rhinitis, a Common Cold, or Sinusitis can cause congestion and rubbing that irritate the lining. Hypertension may be relevant to overall assessment, although a nosebleed does not by itself diagnose it.

Note which nostril bleeds, how often it happens, whether it follows blowing or injury, and whether you bruise or bleed elsewhere. Repeated bleeding from one area may need an examination of the nasal lining.

First aid and prevention

Sit upright, lean slightly forward, and pinch the soft part of the nose continuously while breathing through your mouth. Spitting out blood helps avoid swallowing it. After the bleeding stops, avoid picking, forceful blowing, heavy exertion, and very hot drinks for a while. Keep the nasal lining comfortable with advice from a pharmacist or clinician, particularly if you use sprays or blood-thinning medicines.

When to seek care

Arrange a medical review when nosebleeds keep recurring, follow an injury, occur with unusual bruising, or happen while taking blood-thinning medicine. Seek urgent help if bleeding is heavy, you feel faint, blood is affecting breathing, or firm pressure does not control it.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the nasal lining, blood pressure, allergies, sinus symptoms, or medicines could be contributing. Tell the clinician how you applied pressure and whether bleeding occurs from one nostril or both.

Questions people ask

Should I tilt my head back during a nosebleed?

No. Sit upright and lean slightly forward so blood is less likely to run into the throat, then pinch the soft part of the nose.

Can allergies cause recurring nosebleeds?

Allergic Rhinitis can cause congestion, rubbing, and irritation that make bleeding more likely, but recurring episodes still deserve review when they persist.
