Recurrent common cold: what to know

A Common Cold can cause a blocked nose, sore throat, cough, tiredness, and sometimes fever. A new episode may begin after recovery because many viruses can produce similar symptoms; lingering irritation can also make a cough or blocked nose last after the infection improves. Sinusitis, Acute Bronchitis, Croup, or a Middle Ear Infection may need consideration when symptoms are severe, localised, or prolonged. Repeated symptoms do not by themselves prove that one infection has never cleared.

Rest, drink enough fluid to avoid dehydration, and use simple measures such as saline nasal rinsing or humidified air if comfortable. Wash hands, improve ventilation, and avoid sharing cups or towels while unwell. A pharmacist can advise on symptom relief and whether a product is suitable for your age, pregnancy status, and other medicines. Antibiotics do not treat viral colds; arrange a GP review when episodes are unusually frequent, recovery is incomplete, or symptoms interfere with normal activity.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, blue lips, severe drowsiness, dehydration, or a child with noisy breathing or difficulty swallowing. Arrange prompt assessment for chest pain, a high or persistent fever, severe facial pain, worsening after initial improvement, ear discharge or marked Earache, or a cough that is getting worse. People with significant long-term illness or weakened immunity should seek advice earlier.

Ask whether each episode sounds like a cold, whether allergies or sinus disease could contribute, which symptoms require examination, and how to prevent spread at home.
