Recovery After Cone Biopsy

A cone biopsy removes a cone-shaped sample of cervical tissue for laboratory examination. It may follow colposcopy when cervical cells need closer assessment or treatment. Mild cramping, watery or blood-stained discharge, and light bleeding can occur as the area heals. The result helps your clinician decide whether further monitoring or treatment is needed for cervical dysplasia or another finding.

Healing is internal, so feeling well does not mean the cervix is ready for every activity. Your instructions may restrict vaginal sex, tampons, swimming, and strenuous exercise for a period set by your clinician.

Use pads rather than tampons if bleeding occurs, take prescribed or recommended pain relief as directed, and rest when tired. Avoid inserting anything into the vagina and avoid heavy exertion until your care team clears you. Keep the follow-up appointment so the laboratory result and next steps are explained. Ask when you can return to work, drive, exercise, and resume sex; the answer depends on the procedure and your healing.

Contact your clinic urgently for bleeding that is heavy or increasing, large clots, severe or worsening pelvic pain, fever, chills, or foul-smelling discharge. Seek emergency help if bleeding makes you faint, you feel severely weak, or you develop sudden breathing difficulty. If you are pregnant or may be pregnant, tell the team because follow-up and future pregnancy planning need individual discussion.
