Recipient Site Skin Graft: What to Know

The recipient site is the wound area where a skin graft is placed, and its protection is central to graft healing. The graft needs close contact with the wound bed while new blood supply develops, so dressings, pressure, movement, and moisture must be managed as instructed.

A graft may cover a wound created by injury, surgery, infection, or removal of damaged skin. The receiving area can look red, swollen, bruised, or crusted during early healing. Colour and texture may continue to change as the graft matures.

The site may be on a limb, face, scalp, or another body region, and movement across a joint can place extra tension on it. A clinician will choose the dressing and activity limits for the graft’s location and type.

Keep the dressing in place and dry or moisturised exactly as directed; do not lift it to inspect the graft unless told to do so. Avoid rubbing, picking, soaking, pressure, and stretching the area. Attend dressing changes and follow instructions about bathing, elevation, movement, and sun protection.

Tell the team about smoking, diabetes, circulation problems, immune conditions, and medicines that affect bleeding or healing. Fractional Laser Treatment may be discussed later for texture or colour, but only after the graft has healed and the treating clinician considers it appropriate.

Report increasing pain, spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, heavy bleeding, a foul smell, or the graft lifting from the wound. A sudden dark, pale, or cold appearance also needs prompt advice. Do not wait for a routine appointment if the dressing becomes soaked or displaced.

Ask how to clean and cover the recipient site, how much movement is safe, and what the graft should look like each day. Confirm when dressings and sutures are removed, how the donor site differs, which symptoms are urgent, and when scar or colour treatment can be considered.
