Reason for a DEXA scan

Bone can become thinner without causing symptoms until a fracture occurs. A scan may be suggested after a fracture from a minor fall, when a person has factors that weaken bone, or to monitor an existing bone condition. It can also be relevant when hormone changes affect bone strength, including Premature Ovarian Insufficiency. The scan compares bone density with reference values and helps a clinician decide whether lifestyle measures, monitoring, or treatment should be discussed. It is one part of an overall assessment, alongside medical history and other risk factors.

Tell the imaging team if you may be pregnant, have recently had a contrast examination, or cannot lie flat comfortably. Wear clothing without bulky metal and follow the centre’s instructions about medicines and supplements. During the scan, you usually lie still while the DEXA Scanner passes over selected bones, commonly the hip and spine. The appointment is brief, and the report is interpreted by a qualified clinician. Keep the result with your health records so future measurements can be compared.

A DEXA scan is usually planned rather than urgent. Seek prompt medical attention for sudden severe back or hip pain after a fall, inability to bear weight, or a suspected fracture.
