What should you know about really bad headache?

Head pain can arise from a migraine, a viral illness, blocked or inflamed sinuses, dehydration, heat exposure, or muscle tension. Anxiety and poor sleep can also intensify pain. A headache may occur with nausea, light sensitivity, fever, a runny nose, or neck and scalp tenderness. The pattern matters: note when it began, where it hurts, how quickly it built, and whether movement, light, vomiting, or a recent injury changes it.

A headache can accompany conditions such as Common Cold, COVID-19, Dehydration, or Heat Exhaustion, but the symptom alone does not identify its cause.

Rest in a quiet, dim room and take small, regular sips of water if you can keep fluids down. A cool cloth on the forehead may help. Avoid driving if you feel faint, confused, or visually impaired. Use only a pain medicine that you already know is suitable for you, follow its label, and avoid taking repeated doses closer together than directed. Keep a note of medicines taken and any new symptoms.

Seek emergency care for a sudden explosive headache, new weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, confusion, fainting, seizure, stiff neck with fever, repeated vomiting, a new vision problem, or headache after a significant head injury. Arrange urgent medical assessment if severe pain is new, keeps returning, steadily worsens, or feels different from your usual headaches. Do not wait for home measures when warning symptoms are present.

Ask what headache pattern fits your symptoms, whether your blood pressure or neurological function should be checked, and which pain medicines are appropriate for you. Ask how long to monitor the episode and what specific change should prompt urgent review.
