Short answer

There is no single rapid home test that confirms mastitis; assessment usually combines your symptoms, breast examination, and response to supportive care.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Is there a rapid mastitis test?

There is no single rapid home test that confirms mastitis; assessment usually combines your symptoms, breast examination, and response to supportive care. Mastitis is inflammation in breast tissue and can occur during breastfeeding, including when milk removal is difficult. A clinician may ask when the pain, swelling, warmth, redness, or flu-like feeling began and whether one area is becoming more tender. A test is not always needed at the first assessment. If symptoms persist, worsen, or do not fit the expected pattern, the clinician may consider further evaluation to look for another cause or a collection of infected fluid.

What the assessment can mean

Breast pain and redness can have several causes, so a rapid test result is not a substitute for an examination. Mastitis may be associated with a firm, sore area, warmth, swelling, or feeling generally unwell. A blocked or poorly draining area can contribute to inflammation, while bacterial infection may require medical treatment. A clinician may check for a fluctuant area, which can suggest an abscess and may need imaging or drainage. A breast lump is not automatically mastitis, and a painful breast does not by itself establish the cause.

What to do while arranging care

Continue breastfeeding or expressing milk if it is comfortable, but avoid forceful massage or trying to empty the breast aggressively. Rest, drink to thirst, and use a cool pack wrapped in cloth for short periods to ease swelling. Check that the baby is positioned and attached comfortably; a lactation consultant can help correct feeding mechanics. Wear a supportive bra that does not compress the tender area. Ask a pharmacist or clinician which pain relief is suitable for you, especially if you are pregnant, have a medical condition, or take other medicines.

When to seek medical care

Arrange prompt medical advice if breast inflammation is getting worse, you feel feverish or markedly unwell, or the tender area is expanding. Seek urgent care for severe illness, confusion, fainting, trouble breathing, or signs of dehydration. Contact a clinician when symptoms are not improving with supportive measures, return repeatedly, or a lump remains after inflammation settles. A clinician can decide whether you need antibiotics, imaging, or assessment for an abscess.

Questions for your doctor

You could ask: Does my examination suggest inflammation, infection, or another breast problem? Do I need an ultrasound or another test? Should I continue breastfeeding or expressing milk? Which symptoms mean I should return sooner? If this keeps happening, could feeding technique, milk removal, or another health issue be contributing?

Questions people ask

Can a rapid test tell me whether mastitis is bacterial?

Not usually at home. A clinician uses your symptoms and examination, then decides whether further testing or treatment is appropriate.

Should I stop breastfeeding if I think I have mastitis?

Many people can continue feeding or expressing if comfortable, but forceful emptying can aggravate swelling. Get individual advice if feeding is very painful or you feel unwell.

What if a lump remains after mastitis symptoms improve?

Arrange a clinical examination rather than relying on a home test, because a persistent lump may need further assessment.
