What should you know about radiology tuberculosis?

Tuberculosis can affect the lungs and other parts of the body. A chest X-ray may show patterns that prompt further assessment, but similar appearances can occur with other conditions. Active tuberculosis is assessed using your symptoms, examination, exposure history and tests such as a sputum test or tuberculosis screening. A scan may be considered when more detail is needed. HIV infection and medicines that weaken immunity can affect risk and the clinician’s testing plan, but they do not make an imaging appearance diagnostic by themselves.

If a clinician recommends imaging or screening, complete the planned tests and give a clear history of cough, fever, night sweats, swollen glands, travel, previous exposure and past treatment. Do not stop prescribed treatment without advice. If active pulmonary tuberculosis is being considered, follow infection-control instructions while results are pending, including any advice about close contact and returning to work or shared spaces. Keep the appointment where the report and test results will be reviewed together.

Arrange prompt medical review for a cough that persists, recurring fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss or swollen glands. Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, coughing blood, confusion, fainting or sudden deterioration. If you have been told you may have infectious tuberculosis, follow the treating team’s advice about contact with others while assessment continues.

Ask what the image shows, whether active or previous infection is being considered, which test will confirm the cause, and how long results may take. Ask when you can safely work or mix with others and which symptoms should trigger urgent review.
