How treatment is approached

Care depends on whether a person has had a possible exposure or has symptoms. After exposure, clinicians clean the wound and assess the animal, contact and vaccination history. They may give rabies vaccine and rabies immunoglobulin when indicated. These measures help the immune system act before the virus reaches the nervous system.

When symptoms have started, rabies is a medical emergency. Hospital teams provide close monitoring and supportive care for breathing, swallowing, circulation, pain, agitation and other complications. Do not attempt home treatment or wait for a diagnostic result before seeking help.

Steps after possible exposure

Wash a bite, scratch or contaminated area immediately with soap and running water. Avoid applying irritating substances and do not tightly close the wound before medical assessment. Call urgent medical services, report the animal and describe exactly where saliva or nervous tissue may have contacted you.

When to seek care

Seek urgent care after a mammal bite or scratch, or when saliva reaches broken skin, the eyes, mouth or nose. Go to emergency care for fever with confusion, unusual agitation, difficulty swallowing, weakness, paralysis, breathing difficulty or a severe wound. Symptoms are not a safe test of whether prevention is needed.
