Rabbit bite and rabies: what to know

A rabbit bite should be washed promptly and assessed by a clinician, while rabies decisions depend on the animal and exposure. Do not wait for symptoms before seeking advice if the rabbit was unfamiliar, behaving abnormally, unavailable for assessment, or the bite broke the skin.

Rabies is transmitted through infected saliva, usually after a bite or scratch from an infected mammal. A rabbit bite can also introduce ordinary skin bacteria, damage tissue, and create a need to review tetanus protection. The risk assessment considers where the incident occurred, whether saliva contacted broken skin or the eyes or mouth, the rabbit's behaviour, and whether reliable observation is possible.

The absence of immediate symptoms does not settle the rabies question. Medical teams may contact public-health services and decide whether post-exposure prophylaxis is appropriate.

Rinse and wash the wound thoroughly with running water and soap as soon as possible. Remove rings near swelling, cover the area with a clean dressing, and avoid sealing a deep puncture at home. Do not apply irritating chemicals or attempt to catch an unfamiliar animal.

Record the time and place, describe the rabbit, and keep any safe information about its owner or vaccination history. Arrange same-day medical advice for a deep wound, a bite to the hand or face, or any uncertain rabies exposure. A clinician may discuss rabies post-exposure prophylaxis and rabies vaccination.

Go urgently for uncontrolled bleeding, severe pain, loss of movement or sensation, a wound near the eye, or swelling and redness spreading from the bite. Emergency help is needed for breathing difficulty, collapse, or facial swelling. Seek prompt assessment even when the wound looks small if the animal or saliva exposure is uncertain.

Ask whether the wound needs closure, antibiotics, tetanus review, rabies assessment, or follow-up. Tell the clinician when the bite happened, whether skin broke, and whether saliva reached another wound or mucous membrane.
