What should you know about quit snoring?

Short answer
To quit or reduce snoring, address nasal blockage, sleep position, alcohol, and weight-related factors, while checking for obstructive sleep apnoea when warning signs occur.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why snoring happens
Snoring is produced when relaxed tissues in the nose, mouth, or throat vibrate as air moves during sleep. A blocked nose from allergic rhinitis or chronic sinusitis can make this more noticeable. Sleeping on your back, drinking alcohol near bedtime, smoking, and some sedating medicines may also narrow the airway.
Snoring can be harmless, but loud regular snoring with witnessed pauses, gasping, morning headaches, dry mouth, or marked daytime sleepiness can occur with obstructive sleep apnoea. The snoring symptom itself does not prove that condition.
Ways to reduce it
Try sleeping on your side, keeping a regular sleep schedule, treating nasal congestion with advice from a clinician or pharmacist, and avoiding alcohol close to bedtime. Do not stop prescribed medicines without guidance. If weight is contributing, a structured weight management programme can support gradual, sustainable changes rather than relying on unverified devices or supplements.
Ask someone who sleeps nearby whether they notice breathing pauses, choking sounds, or restless sleep. A clinician can review your nose, throat, medicines, and daytime symptoms and decide whether sleep testing is appropriate.
When to seek medical care
Arrange an appointment if snoring is persistent, disrupts sleep, or leaves you tired during the day. Seek prompt help if you wake choking, have repeated breathing pauses, fall asleep unintentionally, or feel unsafe driving because of sleepiness. Sudden breathing difficulty while awake needs emergency care.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether nasal blockage, sleep apnoea, medicines, or weight may be involved; whether a sleep study is needed; which nasal treatments are suitable; and what changes your household should monitor overnight.
