Quest liver function test: what to know

The panel may include enzymes released when liver cells or bile ducts are irritated, a protein made by the liver, and markers showing how the body processes bile pigments. The pattern matters more than a single value. Results can be influenced by medicines, alcohol, recent illness, muscle injury and other conditions, so an abnormal result does not automatically identify one diagnosis.

A clinician may compare the result with earlier tests, examine you, and request further blood tests or imaging. Viral hepatitis and alcohol-related liver disease are among the possible causes considered when the history and pattern fit.

Check whether fasting is required and provide a complete list of prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, supplements and alcohol use. Do not stop prescribed medicine unless the prescriber tells you to. If results are outside range, ask what will be repeated, what other checks are needed, and whether you should avoid alcohol or a particular medicine while the cause is clarified.

Seek urgent care for yellow skin or eyes with confusion, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal swelling, or sudden severe abdominal pain. Arrange prompt advice for dark urine, pale stools, persistent itching, unexplained weight loss or ongoing nausea.

Ask which markers are abnormal, whether the pattern suggests liver-cell or bile-duct irritation, and what follow-up test or medicine review is planned.
