Quest Diagnostics vitamin D test: what to know

The test usually measures a circulating form of vitamin D in a blood sample. The result is interpreted with your symptoms, medical history, medicines, kidney and liver health, and the laboratory's reference range. A result outside that range does not by itself explain every symptom or prove that vitamin D is the cause.

Low vitamin D may be considered alongside bone or muscle symptoms and risk factors such as limited sun exposure, absorption problems or certain medicines. Fibromyalgia and other conditions can also cause widespread pain or fatigue, so testing should be part of a wider clinical assessment.

Ask the testing service whether you need any preparation and tell the clinician about supplements, medicines and relevant health conditions. Do not take extra vitamin D solely because a result is pending. After testing, discuss the actual result, its units and the laboratory range. If supplementation is advised, follow the planned product and review schedule rather than combining several products.

Arrange medical advice for persistent bone pain, muscle weakness, repeated falls, or symptoms that continue despite a result being addressed. Seek prompt help for severe weakness, confusion, vomiting or symptoms after taking an excessive amount of a supplement.

Ask why the test is being requested, what your result means in its laboratory range, whether another cause of symptoms needs checking, and when to repeat or review treatment.
