Quantitative gait analysis: what to expect

Short answer
Quantitative gait analysis measures how you walk or run using timed movement, joint motion, and foot-pressure data to identify patterns that may guide treatment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What is measured
During an assessment, a clinician watches your walking pattern and may record several passes along a walkway or treadmill. Cameras, wearable sensors, or a pressure surface can capture stride timing, step length, stance, swing, joint angles, and how force moves through each foot.
The measurements add detail to a physical examination. They can help reveal asymmetry, excessive loading in one region, altered knee or hip motion, or a change in balance. A graph is not a diagnosis by itself; pain, strength, footwear, previous injury, and your usual activity all affect interpretation.
Preparing for the assessment
Bring the shoes you commonly use for the activity being assessed and wear comfortable clothing that allows movement. Tell the clinician whether you use a brace, orthotic, walking aid, or pain medicine. You may be asked to walk at a comfortable pace and then repeat a task that reflects your symptoms.
After reviewing the results, the team may suggest exercise, technique changes, footwear adjustments, or custom orthotics. A useful plan links each recommendation to a measured finding and includes a way to reassess function rather than relying on a single number.
When to seek medical care
Gait analysis is not a substitute for urgent assessment. Seek prompt care for sudden inability to bear weight, a new marked limp after injury, severe swelling, rapidly worsening pain, new weakness, or numbness. Chest pain or breathlessness with a swollen painful leg requires emergency help. Do not push through a test if walking becomes unsafe.
Questions to ask
Ask which measurements are abnormal, whether the finding matches your symptoms, and what change would show that treatment is helping. Clarify whether you need motion capture, a pressure-plate assessment, or another examination, and ask how any orthotic or exercise recommendation will be reviewed.

Questions people ask
Can gait analysis diagnose the cause of pain?
It can identify movement patterns that may contribute to symptoms, but diagnosis also requires history and physical examination.
Should I bring my usual shoes?
Yes. Your regular shoes can show how footwear affects movement and loading, especially when the assessment relates to running or daily walking.
