What should you know about pure DCIS?

DCIS is often found on a mammogram as tiny areas of calcium, although some people notice a lump or other breast change. A breast biopsy examines the cells and confirms whether they are confined to a duct. The word pure signals that the tested tissue shows DCIS without an invasive component; the final assessment also considers the sample, imaging and surgery findings.

DCIS is not the same as invasive breast cancer, but untreated or incompletely removed abnormal cells may require active management. The pathology report can describe the grade, extent and hormone-receptor findings. These details help the breast team discuss the chance of DCIS remaining in the breast and the most suitable way to reduce future risk.

Treatment commonly involves removing the area with a lumpectomy or, when the affected area is extensive or other factors apply, a mastectomy. Radiotherapy may be discussed after breast-conserving surgery. Hormone therapy for cancer may be considered when the cells have relevant hormone receptors. A mammogram and breast examination remain part of ongoing breast care.

Ask for an explanation of the biopsy and surgical pathology, including whether the edges around removed tissue are clear. Discuss breast size, the distribution of the abnormal area, reconstruction options when relevant, and how treatment might affect sensation, movement and future imaging.

Contact your breast team promptly if a breast lump grows, new skin dimpling or redness appears, the nipple turns inward, or there is bloody or persistent discharge. After a biopsy or operation, seek urgent advice for heavy bleeding, fever, rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain or redness spreading around the wound.
