Puffiness Below the Knee: What to Know

Swelling below the knee may involve the skin, soft tissue, or the whole lower leg. A local reaction can follow an insect bite, shaving, a minor knock, or contact with a new product. Itching and raised patches fit hives or angioedema. Redness, heat, tenderness, and fever raise concern for cellulitis. Swelling that is deeper, one-sided, painful, or associated with calf tightness needs a clinician to assess circulation and other tissues. The location by itself does not establish the cause.

Look for a bite, scrape, rash, or recent injury, and compare the affected leg with the other side. Record whether the swelling changes after standing, walking, or resting. Swelling with throat or tongue enlargement also needs emergency help.
