Short answer

Psoriatic arthritis is an inflammatory condition in which the immune system can affect joints and the places where tendons attach.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Type
Inflammatory joint and tendon-attachment condition.
Pattern
Symptoms may fluctuate and affect different body areas.

How it can appear

PsA may cause joint pain, swelling, warmth, or stiffness. Morning stiffness can last long enough to make dressing, gripping, or walking difficult. Some people notice a whole finger or toe becoming swollen, heel pain from tendon attachment inflammation, or discomfort in the lower back. Skin or nail psoriasis may be present, but joint symptoms can also be the first concern.

Symptoms can change over time, with quieter periods and flares. A diagnosis is based on the pattern of symptoms, examination, medical history, and sometimes imaging or blood tests. No single symptom or test proves PsA by itself.

Managing symptoms and protecting movement

Arrange an assessment if persistent swelling, pain, or stiffness is limiting normal activities. Note which joints are affected, whether symptoms are worse after rest, and any skin or nail changes. Gentle movement within comfort can help prevent stiffness; forcing a swollen joint may aggravate it.

Treatment can include medicines chosen to calm inflammation, symptom relief, and physiotherapy. A physiotherapist may tailor exercises for strength, range of motion, posture, and joint protection. Anti-inflammatory medication should be used only as advised, especially if you have stomach, kidney, heart, or pregnancy-related concerns.

When to seek care promptly

Seek prompt advice for a joint that becomes suddenly much more swollen, hot, and painful, particularly with fever or feeling unwell. Urgent assessment is also appropriate for sudden loss of strength, a new painful red eye with light sensitivity, or severe back pain with new bladder or bowel problems.

Questions people ask

Is psoriatic arthritis the same as osteoarthritis?

No. PsA involves inflammation linked to immune activity, while osteoarthritis mainly involves changes in joint tissues over time.

Can PsA affect areas beyond joints?

Yes. It can involve tendon attachments, the spine, skin, and nails, so mention all symptoms during an assessment.
