Short answer

Scalp psoriasis can occur alongside psoriatic arthritis, but scalp symptoms alone do not confirm that the joints are inflamed.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Scalp clue
Scale may extend beyond the hairline and can be itchy or sore.
Joint clue
Pain, swelling or morning stiffness needs separate assessment.

How the scalp fits the picture

Scalp psoriasis may cause sharply defined, itchy or sore areas with scale that extends beyond the hairline. Psoriatic arthritis presents with joint, tendon or spinal inflammation; the two conditions can occur together, but one does not prove the other. Watch for joint pain, swelling, morning stiffness, heel pain, nail pitting or a whole swollen finger or toe. Hair shedding can follow irritation or scratching, and it does not by itself indicate arthritis. A clinician can assess the skin and ask about movement-related symptoms.

Managing symptoms and tracking change

Use scalp treatments exactly as directed and avoid picking or forceful scraping, which can irritate the skin. Keep notes about itch, scale, nail changes and any joint symptoms, including stiffness after waking. Take photographs when the scalp is active if it changes before review. Seek assessment if joint symptoms persist or recur, even when the scalp is controlled. When to seek care

Arrange a routine review for a new scalp rash that does not settle, repeated bleeding from scratching, or joint pain and swelling occurring with skin flares. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, pus, fever, severe tenderness or facial swelling, which may suggest infection or another problem. Sudden severe joint swelling also needs timely assessment.

Questions for your doctor

Is this scalp change consistent with psoriasis or another skin condition? Do my nails or joints suggest inflammatory arthritis? Which scalp treatment is suitable for my hair and skin? Should I see a rheumatology or physiotherapy professional?
