Psoriatic arthritis and a knee X-ray

A knee X-ray creates images of bone alignment, joint spaces and some bony changes. It may help identify damage, another bone problem or an alternative explanation for pain. Early inflammation can be present even when an X-ray looks unremarkable, because soft tissues and active inflammation are not fully shown. Tell the imaging team if pregnancy is possible and follow their positioning instructions. Bring the report to the clinician who ordered it, because an image finding must be matched with your symptoms and examination. Ask whether ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging is more useful for suspected soft-tissue inflammation. An X-ray appointment should not delay urgent care for a suddenly hot, swollen knee with fever, severe illness or inability to bear weight. Contact your clinician if pain, swelling or morning stiffness persists after the scan, even if the report is described as normal. New numbness, weakness or a major injury needs prompt assessment.
