How Is Psoriatic Arthritis Diagnosed?

There is no single test that confirms psoriatic arthritis. A clinician asks about joint pain, swelling, morning joint stiffness, heel or tendon pain, psoriasis, and family history. They examine joints and look at the skin, scalp, and nails. The pattern of symptoms helps distinguish inflammatory arthritis from problems caused mainly by injury or wear.

Bring a list of medicines and note which joints are affected, when stiffness is worst, and whether symptoms improve with movement. Mention past or current psoriasis even if the skin changes are small or hidden. Blood tests may look for inflammation and help exclude other conditions; they do not by themselves prove or rule out psoriatic arthritis. X-rays, ultrasound, or magnetic resonance imaging may show joint or tendon inflammation when the examination needs more detail.

Book an assessment for persistent swelling, recurring inflammatory-type pain, or stiffness that interferes with everyday activities. Prompt review is especially useful when a swollen finger or toe, heel pain, or new back stiffness occurs alongside psoriasis. Seek urgent care for a rapidly hot, severely painful joint with fever, or sudden weakness or loss of bladder or bowel control.

Ask which findings support psoriatic arthritis, what other causes are being considered, and whether imaging or blood tests are appropriate. Clarify when results will be reviewed and whether you should start physiotherapy or anti-inflammatory medication while the assessment continues.
