Is psoriatic arthritis hereditary?

Family history can be one part of a person’s background. It does not predict exactly who will develop PsA, when symptoms might begin, or how severe they may be. Relatives may have psoriasis, joint inflammation, or both, and some people with PsA have no known family history.

Watch for persistent joint pain, swelling, or morning stiffness, especially when these symptoms occur with psoriasis or nail changes. These features do not establish a diagnosis by themselves. A clinician looks at the symptom pattern, examines the joints, and considers other explanations such as injury or another inflammatory condition.

Tell your doctor which relatives have psoriasis or inflammatory arthritis and which symptoms they experienced. Keep a simple record of your own joint symptoms, skin changes, stiffness, and activities that affect them. Staying active within comfort, protecting painful joints, and attending planned reviews can support day-to-day function.

If symptoms develop, ask about an assessment rather than waiting for a family member’s experience to repeat. Treatment may include anti-inflammatory medication, physiotherapy, or other care selected for your symptoms and overall health.

Arrange a routine assessment for joint swelling or stiffness that persists, returns, or limits daily tasks. Seek urgent help for a suddenly hot and swollen joint with fever, severe pain after an injury, or new weakness, numbness, or loss of movement.
