Psoriasis peeling: what it means and what to do

Psoriasis accelerates the movement of skin cells to the surface. Those cells can accumulate into a thicker plaque before shedding, so flakes may come away from the scalp, elbows, knees, or other affected sites. Peeling does not show how extensive the inflammation is by itself. Removing flakes forcefully can expose fragile skin, increase irritation, and create small cracks. Similar shedding can occur with dry skin, eczema, irritation, or infection, so a new or unusual pattern should be examined rather than self-labelled.

Follow the treatment plan given for psoriasis and apply products to clean, dry skin as instructed. Moisturise regularly with a bland, fragrance-free emollient, especially after washing. Let scale soften before gently washing it away; do not pick, peel, or use abrasive scrubs. Keep showers comfortably warm, pat dry, and pause products that sting or add fragrance. Note where peeling occurs, whether it follows a new product, and whether bleeding or cracking develops.

Book an assessment when peeling is extensive, painful, recurrent, or not settling with your usual care. Prompt review is appropriate for bleeding, open cracks, yellow crust, pus, warmth, swelling, fever, or rapidly worsening redness.
