Psoriasis around the hairline: what to know

Hairline psoriasis may extend from the scalp onto the forehead, temples, or skin behind the ears. It can create a sharply defined patch with redness or darker colouring and dry, adherent scale. Itching, soreness, and skin cracking are possible, especially when scale is lifted by scratching. The visible edge does not mean the condition is caused by hair products or poor washing. Contact dermatitis, eczema, and seborrhoeic dermatitis can resemble it, so diagnosis is based on the pattern and examination.

Wash gently and avoid scraping the hairline with a comb or fingernails. Separate hair in small sections when applying a prescribed scalp product so it reaches the skin rather than coating the hair. Use a thin layer only where advised, and wipe away any product that spreads toward the eyes. Fragrance, gels, dyes, heat, tight styles, and extensions may irritate an active border; reduce them during a flare. Moisturise exposed skin with a bland, fragrance-free emollient if recommended.

Arrange a review if the border keeps expanding, bleeds after scratching, causes persistent discomfort, or affects confidence despite care. Seek prompt help if the area becomes hot, very swollen, increasingly painful, or starts draining. Sudden patchy hair loss, broken hairs, or scalp tenderness also deserve assessment because infections and other scalp conditions need different treatment. Report nail changes or joint stiffness as well.
