PSMA-targeted therapy

Short answer

PSMA-targeted therapy uses a medicine designed to recognise PSMA on selected cancer cells, helping direct treatment toward cells carrying that marker.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Key marker
Prostate-specific membrane antigen, or PSMA
Selection
Target testing plus review of health and prior treatment
Effects
Depend on the medicine used and organs exposed

How doctors use the idea

PSMA is most closely associated with prostate cancer, but the phrase can be confusing because not every PSMA-directed approach is the same. Your team may use imaging or tissue information to assess whether the target is visible. Treatment planning also considers the cancer’s location, earlier therapy, kidney function, blood counts, symptoms, and other health conditions. Possible effects depend on the medicine: tiredness, nausea, dry mouth, skin effects, changes in blood counts, or organ strain may be discussed.

What you can do before treatment

Ask which PSMA test supports the recommendation and whether the treatment is radioactive. Share your medicines, supplements, allergies, kidney problems, and previous treatments. Keep appointments for scans and laboratory checks. Arrange help with travel and daily tasks if fatigue is expected, and request written instructions about fluids, eating, medicines, and home precautions.

When to seek medical help

Call your cancer team for fever, repeated vomiting, new bleeding, severe mouth dryness that prevents drinking, or a noticeable drop in urine. Seek urgent care for collapse, severe breathing trouble, sudden confusion, or uncontrolled symptoms. Use the contact number supplied by the treating service if symptoms begin after an infusion or radioactive treatment.

Questions worth asking

Ask what PSMA evidence was found, what treatment component will be delivered, what alternatives exist, how response will be assessed, and which side effects need same-day advice. Clarify the number and timing of visits, laboratory monitoring, and restrictions after treatment.

Questions people ask

Does PSMA-targeted therapy suit every cancer?

No. Suitability depends on the cancer type, target testing, treatment history, organ function, and the specific medicine being considered.

Is every PSMA-targeted treatment radioactive?

No. Some PSMA-directed medicines carry radiation, while others use a different treatment component. Ask your team which type is planned.
