PSMA prostate PET scan: preparation and results

The scan begins with an injection of a PSMA-targeting tracer. PET detects the tracer after it circulates, and a CT component may show the nearby anatomy. The images can help identify activity in the prostate area, lymph nodes, bones, or distant organs. They are interpreted as part of a wider assessment, because uptake can occur for reasons other than cancer and a scan cannot answer every clinical question alone.

Your clinician may request this examination to clarify staging, investigate a change after treatment, or compare a suspected recurrence with earlier information. The report may describe location, size, and appearance, but your team will explain what those observations mean for you.

Share your medication list and tell the service about kidney conditions, diabetes, allergies, pregnancy, or breastfeeding. Check whether you need to change eating or drinking before arrival. The visit includes injection, a circulation interval, positioning, and image acquisition, so comfortable clothing and extra time can help. Remain still during scanning and tell staff if you feel unwell.

Once the report is available, ask how it fits with prostate-specific blood testing, examination, biopsy, and previous imaging. Possible next steps vary and can include monitoring, surgery, radiotherapy, or another treatment discussion.

Report immediate itching, swelling, dizziness, or breathing changes after injection. Emergency care is needed for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, or sudden deterioration. Independently of the scan, seek prompt medical advice for inability to pass urine, new leg weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or severe back pain.

Ask what prompted the scan, whether it is a PET-only or PET-CT appointment, how preparation affects your medicines, and when the findings will be reviewed. Ask which result would lead to another scan, biopsy, or treatment conversation.
