What should you know about pseudogout knee X-ray?

Calcium pyrophosphate crystals can collect in cartilage and appear as thin, bright lines or areas of calcification on an X-ray. In the knee, a radiologist may examine the cartilage around the joint and the space between the bones, as well as signs of wear. These findings can fit pseudogout, also called calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease, but they may be subtle or absent even when symptoms are present.

An X-ray also helps look for osteoarthritis, a fracture or another structural explanation for pain. It does not show every cause of inflammation and does not identify infection. If the knee is hot and acutely swollen, fluid taken from the joint may be examined for crystals and infection.

Share the full report and the timing of your symptoms with the clinician reviewing the image. Mention whether the pain began suddenly, whether the knee feels hot, and whether you have had earlier attacks. Management may involve rest with comfortable movement, prescribed anti-inflammatory medication, a cortisone injection or joint aspiration when clinically appropriate.

Get urgent assessment for a swollen knee accompanied by fever, chills, severe unrelenting pain, rapidly spreading redness or an inability to move the leg. A crystal flare and a joint infection can look similar at first, so an X-ray should not delay evaluation when you feel systemically unwell.

Ask what the X-ray actually shows, whether the cartilage is calcified, whether another test is needed, and which symptoms should prompt same-day review.
