What should you know about pseudo angina?

Discomfort may arise from the chest wall, reflux, the oesophagus, anxiety, or another condition, yet the sensation can overlap with heart-related pain. It may feel like pressure, squeezing, burning, or tightness and can spread to the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder. The pattern alone cannot safely exclude angina. High blood pressure and other cardiovascular risks can change the threshold for assessment, so describe symptoms in detail rather than assuming the label explains them.

Stop exertion and note when the discomfort began, what you were doing, where it is, and whether it changes with breathing, movement, meals, or rest. Do not drive yourself if symptoms are severe or accompanied by sweating, nausea, breathlessness, faintness, or spreading pain. A clinician may check vital signs, examine the chest, review risk factors, and use an electrocardiogram or other tests to guide next steps. Take prescribed medicines only as directed.

Call emergency services for new, severe, persistent, or worsening chest pressure, especially with breathlessness, collapse, cold sweating, nausea, or pain spreading beyond the chest. Seek prompt medical advice even if discomfort has settled when it is recurring, brought on by activity, or different from your usual symptoms. A settled episode still deserves a clear explanation.

Ask which causes are being considered, whether you need an ECG or other evaluation, and how to respond if the pain returns. Share your blood pressure history, smoking status, family history, medicines, and any relationship to exercise or meals.
