PSA PET scan

A radiotracer is given before imaging, then the PET camera detects areas that take up the tracer while CT provides anatomical detail. This combination can help the clinical team look for prostate cancer in the prostate bed, lymph nodes, bones, or other sites when the scan is appropriate. A bright area is not automatically cancer, and a scan may not detect very small or low-activity disease. The report is interpreted with your history, PSA pattern, examination, and other imaging.

The imaging centre will explain preparation, including when to arrive, whether you should eat or drink, and which medicines to discuss. Tell the team if you might be pregnant, are breastfeeding, have diabetes, or have difficulty lying still. Wear comfortable clothing and follow instructions after the tracer is given. A scan appointment is usually planned rather than urgent, but contact the imaging team before attendance if you have an acute illness or cannot follow the preparation instructions. After the scan, report rash, swelling, breathing difficulty, dizziness, or other sudden symptoms immediately. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, collapse, or rapidly worsening symptoms.
