Proton treatment for lung cancer

Proton treatment for lung cancer uses a planned radiation beam to target the tumour while the team works to limit dose to nearby healthy lung and organs. Suitability depends on tumour location, movement with breathing, stage, previous treatment, lung function, and whether surgery, chemotherapy, or another approach is more appropriate.

The team reviews scans to map the tumour, lymph nodes, heart, oesophagus, spinal cord, and remaining lung. Because breathing changes the position of a lung tumour, planning may include four-dimensional imaging, breath control, or motion management. A treatment plan estimates how the beam will cover the target while respecting nearby organs.

Proton treatment is not automatically suitable for every lung tumour. The oncology team may discuss radiotherapy, surgery such as lung lobectomy, systemic treatment such as chemotherapy, or genomic tumour profiling. The choice reflects the cancer’s features and your overall health, not a single scan finding.

Attend planning scans and practise any breathing or breath-hold technique the team teaches. Tell staff about breathlessness, cough, chest pain, swallowing difficulty, or changes in your ability to lie flat. Bring a current medicine list and report prior chest radiotherapy or lung surgery. During treatment, follow instructions about positioning, eating, and medicines, and keep the team informed about new symptoms.

Contact your oncology team promptly for worsening cough, fever, new chest pain, increasing breathlessness, painful swallowing, or difficulty keeping fluids down. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, coughing up more than a small amount of blood, blue lips, fainting, or sudden confusion. A hoarse voice can have several causes and should be assessed if it persists or worsens.

Ask why proton treatment is being considered, how breathing will be managed, which organs are near the target, and what alternatives fit your stage. Ask how symptoms will be monitored and who to contact urgently. If the cancer has spread, ask whether the plan also addresses those areas or whether palliative care is needed for symptom support.
