Proton therapy accelerator: what to know

Inside the facility, an accelerator gives protons energy and sends them through beam-guidance equipment toward a treatment room. Magnets help steer the beam, while the treatment team uses imaging, positioning supports, and planning software to aim it at the intended area. A rotating treatment structure may allow the beam to approach from different directions. The accelerator is part of a larger Proton Therapy System; it does not decide whether proton therapy is right for a person.

Your treatment plan is based on the cancer’s location, shape, movement, nearby organs, previous treatments, and general health. The room can be large and may contain unfamiliar sounds. Staff explain the process and monitor you throughout. The treatment beam is not something you can see or feel, although lying still and returning for scheduled visits can be tiring.

Attend the planning appointment so the team can make an immobilisation device or other support if needed. Tell staff about pregnancy, implanted devices, medicines, pain, difficulty lying flat, and anxiety in enclosed or unfamiliar spaces. Follow instructions about eating, drinking, and medicines. Arrive with enough time for identity and positioning checks. Proton Therapy may be discussed for several cancers, including selected cases of Childhood Cancer, but the facility’s equipment and your individual plan affect access and suitability.

Call your treatment team about fever, new or worsening pain, skin changes that break down, repeated vomiting, severe fatigue, or any symptom that makes travel or treatment difficult. Get urgent help for severe breathing trouble, collapse, confusion, or sudden neurological changes. Do not wait for the next appointment if a symptom is rapidly worsening; the accelerator itself is not a substitute for clinical assessment.

Ask whether proton therapy offers a planning advantage for your target, what other treatments are reasonable, how the accelerator and treatment room will be used, how long each visit may take, what happens if you cannot keep still, and which symptoms require urgent contact. Ask whether the centre has experience treating your cancer type and how your progress will be followed.
