What should you know about proton beam therapy for prostate cancer side effects?

The prostate sits close to the bladder, urethra, rectum, and sexual-function structures. Radiation can temporarily irritate these tissues. You may notice a stronger urge to urinate, a slower stream, burning, looser stools, rectal discomfort, or tiredness. Some effects appear during treatment or soon afterwards; others may develop later. Sexual changes can include reduced erections or altered ejaculation.

The pattern and severity differ between people. Existing urinary or bowel problems, medicines, prostate anatomy, and other treatments can influence what happens. Proton treatment changes where dose is deposited, but it does not remove the possibility of side effects.

Keep a simple record of urinary frequency, bowel changes, pain, and fluid intake. Ask whether caffeine, alcohol, spicy foods, or constipation may aggravate your symptoms. Take only recommended medicines, and tell the team before using remedies for diarrhoea, constipation, or urinary symptoms.

Mention sexual concerns early; support can include medicines, devices, counselling, or referral. Attend review visits even when symptoms are mild because the team can compare changes with your baseline and adjust care.

Contact your treatment team promptly if you cannot pass urine, see blood in urine or stool, develop persistent diarrhoea, have worsening rectal pain, or cannot keep fluids down. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fever with marked weakness, or sudden confusion.
