Prostate biopsy after effects

A biopsy uses a needle to remove small tissue samples from the prostate. The needle can irritate nearby tissue, so the area may feel tender for a short time. Pink or lightly bloody urine and a small amount of blood from the rectum may happen, depending on the route used. Blood in semen can look alarming and may remain visible longer than blood in urine. These findings do not by themselves show whether cancer is present; the laboratory report and your clinical assessment provide that information.

Follow the instructions from your biopsy team about antibiotics, activity, fluids, and medicines that affect bleeding. Rest if you feel sore, avoid strenuous exercise until you are told it is suitable, and use only pain relief that your clinician has approved. Seek urgent medical advice for a fever or chills, worsening pelvic pain, feeling faint, clots or bleeding that does not settle, or urine that will not pass. These symptoms can signal infection, significant bleeding, or urinary blockage and should not be managed by waiting at home.
