Proper diet for diverticulitis

How the structures involved in Diverticular Disease differ from normal

Short answer

The proper diet for diverticulitis depends on symptoms: follow clinical advice, maintain fluids, then gradually restore fibre.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

During symptoms
Follow clinical advice and prioritise fluids if safe
After improvement
Restore fibre gradually according to tolerance
Get assessed
Pain with fever, vomiting or blood needs medical advice

How diet changes

Diverticulitis is inflammation affecting small pouches in the bowel. During an acute episode, abdominal pain, fever, nausea or changed bowel habits may make solid food difficult. A clinician may advise fluids or a temporary low-fibre pattern, depending on the examination and severity; this is not a substitute for assessment.

As pain and other symptoms improve, foods are usually reintroduced gradually. Between episodes, many people can work towards fibre from vegetables, fruit, beans and whole grains, with enough fluid to support softer stools. Individual tolerance varies.

Eating and drinking

Follow the plan given by your GP or treatment team. Take small, frequent drinks and choose foods you can tolerate during recovery. Do not force fibre while pain, vomiting or marked bloating is active. Later, increase fibre slowly and keep a record of foods that trigger discomfort.

Constipation and straining can worsen bowel discomfort. Gentle movement, adequate fluids and a gradual fibre plan may help, but laxatives or supplements should be checked with a clinician. Nutrition Counselling can provide a personalised plan, particularly after repeated episodes or with other digestive conditions.

When to seek care

Arrange a GP Consultation for new or persistent abdominal pain, fever, vomiting, blood in the stool, or a lasting change in bowel habit. Seek urgent care for severe or worsening pain, a swollen rigid abdomen, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion or inability to keep fluids down.

Questions for your doctor

Do my symptoms need assessment before I change my diet? Which foods and fluids are suitable now? When should I increase fibre? Could constipation or another condition explain my pain? Would Nutrition Counselling help?

Questions people ask

Should I avoid nuts and seeds forever?

There is no general need to avoid them after recovery, but discuss personal triggers and any clinician-given restrictions.

Can fibre be increased during a flare?

Not always. Active pain, vomiting or bloating may require a temporary different plan; ask a clinician when to increase fibre.
