What should you know about primary snoring?

Short answer
Primary snoring is sound caused by vibrating relaxed upper-airway tissues during sleep, without repeated breathing pauses or oxygen disruption.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Source of sound
- Vibration of relaxed upper-airway tissues
- Key distinction
- No repeated breathing pauses in primary snoring
What it means
During sleep, the tongue, soft palate and throat muscles relax. Air moving through a narrowed upper airway can make these tissues vibrate. Nasal blockage from allergic rhinitis or chronic sinusitis, sleeping on the back, alcohol near bedtime and excess tissue around the airway can make the sound louder. Primary snoring is different from obstructive sleep apnoea, where airflow repeatedly stops or becomes severely limited and sleep quality can suffer.
What you can do
Treat nasal congestion with advice from a pharmacist or clinician, keep a regular sleep routine and try side sleeping. Avoid alcohol close to bedtime and review sedating medicines with the prescriber rather than stopping them yourself. If weight is contributing, a structured weight-management programme may help. Ask a partner whether they notice pauses, gasping or choking, and record changes in daytime alertness.
When to seek care
Arrange a review if snoring is loud and persistent, disturbs sleep, or occurs with morning headaches, dry mouth, poor concentration or daytime sleepiness. Seek prompt assessment when someone observes breathing pauses, choking or gasping during sleep. Do not drive if you are struggling to stay awake; severe sleepiness can impair reaction time.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your nasal symptoms, medicines or sleep position may be contributing, and whether a sleep assessment is appropriate. Discuss evidence-based options and how to manage snoring if obstructive sleep apnoea is found.

Questions people ask
Is snoring always obstructive sleep apnoea?
No. Snoring can occur without apnoea, but witnessed pauses, gasping and daytime sleepiness need assessment.
Can changing sleep position help?
Side sleeping may reduce airway narrowing for some people, especially when snoring is worse on the back.
