Short answer

Sebaceous hyperplasia cannot always be prevented, but gentle skin care, avoiding unnecessary irritation, and early assessment of changing bumps can support safer management.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Do
Leave bumps alone and arrange assessment if they change.
Avoid
Home piercing, burning, or squeezing.

What the condition looks like

Sebaceous hyperplasia involves enlarged sebaceous, or oil-producing, glands. It often appears as small flesh-coloured or yellowish bumps, commonly on the face, sometimes with a central depression. The bumps are usually a cosmetic concern rather than an emergency, but several skin growths can resemble one another. A new, solitary, bleeding, crusting, rapidly changing, or unusually dark bump should not be assumed to be sebaceous hyperplasia without examination.

Practical skin care and treatment

Cleanse gently and avoid picking, squeezing, abrasive scrubs, or repeatedly applying irritating products to the bumps. Use moisturiser and sunscreen suited to your skin. Do not try to burn, pierce, or remove a bump at home, because this can injure the skin and make diagnosis harder. If bumps are persistent or bothersome, a dermatologist can confirm the diagnosis and discuss options such as electrosurgery or CO2 laser resurfacing. Treatment choice depends on the number, depth, location, and appearance of the lesions, and recurrence can still occur.

When examination is important

Arrange a dermatology review for any uncertain bump, especially one that changes, bleeds, crusts, becomes painful, or fails to heal. Seek prompt care for marked swelling, spreading redness, or drainage. Examination is particularly useful when a lesion does not have the usual appearance, because visual similarity does not provide a reliable diagnosis.

Questions to bring

Does this bump fit sebaceous hyperplasia, or does it need another test? Which option best suits its location and depth? What aftercare should I follow, and how might the treated area change while it heals?

Questions people ask

Can sebaceous hyperplasia be removed at home?

Home removal can cause injury and obscure the diagnosis. A dermatologist should assess and treat persistent bumps.

Can treated bumps return?

They can recur, so discuss follow-up and realistic expectations with the treating clinician.
