How to prevent heel cracks

Short answer
Prevent heel cracks by moisturising thick skin every day, reducing friction, and treating causes of persistent dryness.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Best time to moisturise
- Straight after bathing
- Avoid
- Blades, rough surfaces, and irritating products
Why heels split
Heel skin becomes vulnerable when it is dry, thickened, or repeatedly exposed to pressure. Open shoes, long periods standing, friction, and very hot washing can worsen the problem. Dry Skin may be the main driver, but itching or scaling between the toes can point toward Athlete's Foot. Small splits can deepen and hurt when weight is placed on the heel.
A daily heel routine
After bathing, pat dry and apply a rich moisturiser while the skin is still slightly damp, covering the heel and edges. At night, a cotton sock can help keep the product against the skin. Choose supportive footwear that limits rubbing and avoid walking barefoot on rough surfaces. Do not cut thick skin with blades. A clinician or pharmacist can advise whether Emollient Therapy or a product that softens hard skin is appropriate. Stop any product that causes burning or a rash, and keep deep cracks clean and protected.
When to seek care
Seek medical advice for bleeding, increasing pain, warmth, swelling, pus, spreading redness, or a crack that does not improve with regular care. Arrange assessment sooner if you have diabetes, reduced foot sensation, or circulation problems. Persistent splitting may need treatment for an underlying skin condition rather than moisturiser alone.
Questions for your doctor
Could an infection or skin condition be causing these cracks? Which moisturiser or treatment suits my skin? Is it safe for me to file thick skin, and what warning signs should I watch for?

Questions people ask
Should I soak cracked heels?
Brief washing is enough; prolonged hot soaking can leave skin drier afterward.
Why do my cracks keep returning?
Ongoing dryness, pressure, friction, or an untreated condition can keep the skin splitting.
