Pretibial bursa: what to know

Short answer
The pretibial bursa is a small fluid-filled cushion in front of the upper shin that can become irritated after repeated pressure or injury.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Location
- In front of the upper shin near the knee.
- Common trigger
- Repeated kneeling, rubbing, or a direct blow can irritate the bursa.
- Do not do
- Do not puncture or squeeze a swollen bursa yourself.
Understanding the area
A bursa helps reduce friction where tissues move over one another. The pretibial bursa lies near the front of the knee and upper tibia, so kneeling, a direct blow, or repeated rubbing can make it enlarge and tender. Swelling may feel soft or fluid-filled, though other knee and skin problems can look similar.
Joint Swelling around the knee may come from a deeper joint rather than this bursa. Pain, warmth, redness, range of motion, injury history, and whether symptoms are on the surface or deep help guide assessment.
What you can do
Reduce kneeling and direct contact, use padding when the activity cannot be avoided, and protect the area from further knocks. Gentle knee movement can help prevent stiffness if it does not increase pain. Do not puncture or squeeze the swelling yourself, because this can introduce infection.
A clinician may discuss Anti-Inflammatory Medication after considering your health and other medicines. Persistent fluid may sometimes be evaluated with Joint Aspiration, while a Cortisone Injection is considered only in selected situations after infection has been considered.
When to seek medical care
Arrange prompt medical review if the swelling is hot, red, rapidly enlarging, very painful, or accompanied by fever or feeling unwell. Seek urgent help after a serious injury, inability to move or bear weight, spreading redness, or severe pain. Persistent or recurrent swelling should be examined even if kneeling is the obvious trigger.
Questions for your doctor
Is the swelling in the pretibial bursa or inside the knee joint? Could infection or injury be involved? Should I use padding, medication, aspiration, or another treatment? Which activities are safe while the area settles, and what changes need urgent review?

Questions people ask
Is a pretibial bursa the same as a swollen knee joint?
No. It is a surface cushion near the upper shin, while swelling inside the knee joint is deeper; examination can distinguish them.
Can a pretibial bursa become infected?
Yes. Increasing warmth, redness, pain, rapid swelling, or fever needs prompt medical assessment.
