Pregnant after miscarriage before your period

A positive test soon after a miscarriage can reflect a new pregnancy or pregnancy hormone that has not fully cleared. The date of ovulation may also be uncertain when cycles have not settled. A clinician may use repeat blood tests and a Transvaginal Ultrasound to clarify whether the pregnancy is developing in the uterus and how far along it may be.

A new pregnancy does not automatically mean another miscarriage, but bleeding or pain should be assessed because several conditions can cause these symptoms. Emotional responses can be intense after a loss; practical and emotional support are both appropriate.

Contact your clinician or early-pregnancy service and explain the miscarriage date, how it was managed and when the new test became positive. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice. Take a pregnancy supplement recommended for you, avoid alcohol and arrange follow-up. Keep a record of bleeding, pain and test dates so the team can interpret changes.

If tissue may remain after the earlier loss, your clinician may discuss Medical Management of Miscarriage or Surgical Management of Miscarriage, depending on your examination and preferences.

Seek urgent help for severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, fever or feeling very unwell. These symptoms can signal a complication that needs prompt assessment. Contact your pregnancy team for any new bleeding or persistent pain, even if the symptoms seem mild.
