Pregnancy Skin Tags: What to Know

Short answer
Pregnancy skin tags are soft, usually harmless growths that may develop where skin rubs, but a changing, bleeding, or painful growth should be examined before removal.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical feel
- Soft tissue, sometimes attached by a narrow stalk
- Common friction sites
- Neck, underarms, breasts, and skin folds
- Avoid
- Cutting, tying, burning, or household remedies
Why they may appear
A skin tag is a small piece of soft tissue that often hangs from a narrow stalk. During pregnancy, hormonal changes and increased friction can make tags more noticeable around the neck, underarms, breasts, groin, or other skin folds. They can catch on clothing or jewellery and become sore after rubbing.
A typical tag is flesh-coloured or slightly darker and changes slowly. Not every bump is a skin tag, however. A mole, wart, cyst, or another lesion can look similar, so self-diagnosis is unreliable when the appearance is unusual.
What you can do
Keep the area clean and dry, choose loose breathable clothing, and avoid cutting, tying, burning, or applying household chemicals to the growth. Reduce friction where possible and cover a tag lightly if it repeatedly catches, without wrapping it tightly.
If it is not troublesome, monitoring is reasonable after a clinician has confirmed what it is. Discuss any removal during pregnancy before booking treatment. Cryotherapy (Lesion Removal), Electrosurgery, and Skin Tag Removal can each cause local irritation, bleeding, or a healing wound, so timing and technique should be selected by a qualified clinician.
When to seek care
Book an assessment if a growth changes colour, shape, or size, develops a persistent sore, bleeds without repeated rubbing, becomes firm or painful, or is surrounded by spreading redness. Seek prompt care for heavy bleeding, pus, fever, or rapidly worsening tenderness. A clinician may examine it before discussing any procedure.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the growth has the features of a skin tag, whether pregnancy changes the timing of treatment, how to protect the site from friction, and what signs should prompt a return visit.

Questions people ask
Do skin tags go away after pregnancy?
Some may become less noticeable after pregnancy, while others remain. A clinician can confirm the diagnosis before you wait or choose removal.
Can I remove a skin tag at home while pregnant?
Home removal can cause bleeding, infection, and scarring and may treat the wrong type of growth, so have it assessed instead.
