Short answer

Pre period constipation can happen when cycle-related hormone changes slow bowel movement in the days before bleeding.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical pattern
Symptoms before menstruation that then ease
First measures
Regular fluids, gradual fibre, and gentle movement
Urgent warning
Severe pain, vomiting, blood, or inability to pass wind

What it can mean

Constipation may mean stools are hard, bowel movements are less frequent than usual, or you need to strain. Some people notice this repeatedly before menstruation and improvement once bleeding begins. Low fluid intake, reduced activity, diet changes, iron medicines, and stress can add to the problem. Irritable bowel syndrome, dehydration, hypothyroidism, and diverticular disease are other possible explanations, especially when symptoms are new, continue through the cycle, or come with pain or a change in stool pattern.

What you can do

Drink fluids regularly, move gently, and increase fibre gradually through foods such as vegetables, fruit, pulses, and whole grains. A sudden large fibre increase can worsen wind, so adjust slowly and notice your response. Respond to the urge to open your bowels and allow unhurried toilet time. Nutrition Counselling can help if food choices are difficult. Ask a pharmacist or clinician before using a laxative, particularly if you are pregnant, have significant pain, or take regular medicines.

When to seek care

Get urgent care for severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen hard abdomen, blood or black stool, fainting, or inability to pass stool and wind. Arrange a medical review for constipation that persists, keeps returning without a clear cycle pattern, follows a new medicine, or comes with unexplained weight loss, fever, or marked tiredness.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your symptoms fit a menstrual pattern, how much fibre and fluid is suitable, and whether a medicine or thyroid problem could contribute. Bring details of stool changes, pain, cycle timing, medicines, and what you have already tried.
