What should you know about practical musculoskeletal ultrasound?

An ultrasound probe sends sound waves through the skin and creates live images. The clinician can compare sides, watch a tendon move, assess fluid near a joint, and examine some superficial tears or inflammation. The scan does not use ionising radiation. It is especially useful for structures close to the skin, while deep bone, some internal joint areas, and certain complex injuries may need another test. A scan finding must be interpreted alongside your symptoms and examination rather than treated as a diagnosis on its own.

Wear clothing that allows easy access to the painful area and bring earlier imaging reports if available. Tell the clinician where pain begins, which movements trigger it, and whether swelling changes during the day. During the examination, you may be asked to move the joint or contract a muscle so the tissue can be observed under load. Point-of-care ultrasound can support an assessment during a consultation, while a formal imaging appointment may provide a written report. If an injection is being considered, ultrasound may help guide placement; discuss the purpose and alternatives before a cortisone injection.

Seek prompt medical assessment for sudden loss of movement, a visibly deformed limb, rapidly increasing swelling, a cold or pale hand or foot, new numbness or weakness, or severe pain after an injury. These signs may require urgent examination even if an ultrasound appointment is available. Fever with a hot, swollen joint also needs timely review.
