What should you know about postpartum stretch marks?

Short answer

Postpartum stretch marks are common scars from skin stretching during pregnancy, and they often fade gradually without treatment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What postpartum stretch marks mean

Stretch marks, also called striae, form when deeper skin layers stretch faster than their supporting fibres can adapt. They may begin pink, red, purple, or brown and later become lighter, flatter, and less noticeable. Common areas include the abdomen, breasts, hips, thighs, and buttocks. Their appearance does not reflect poor skin care or a problem with recovery after birth.

What you can do

Use a bland moisturiser if the skin feels dry or itchy, avoid scratching, and protect exposed areas from sun so colour contrast is less noticeable. Creams and oils may improve comfort but cannot reliably remove established marks. If you want more change, a dermatologist can assess whether Microneedling, Fractional Laser Treatment, RF Microneedling, or Carboxytherapy suits your skin tone, mark colour, texture, and breastfeeding or medication history. Treatments usually require a planned series and gradual healing.

When to seek care

Arrange a medical assessment if marks are suddenly appearing without pregnancy-related stretching, are unusually wide, or occur with easy bruising, muscle weakness, or other new body changes. Seek prompt care for severe pain, warmth, spreading redness, drainage, or fever, because those features suggest a separate skin problem rather than ordinary stretch marks.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which treatments are suitable for your skin tone and mark stage, whether breastfeeding changes the plan, how many visits may be needed, and what redness, darkening, crusting, or downtime to expect.
