What should you know about post tussive cough?

Forceful coughing can irritate the throat and airways, creating a cycle in which the next breath triggers another cough. Common cold or acute bronchitis may leave a cough behind while the airways recover. Allergic rhinitis can cause mucus to drain into the throat, while acid reflux can irritate the voice box. Asthma may cause cough with wheeze or chest tightness. A recurrent or persistent pattern needs assessment for causes such as chronic cough, bronchiectasis or another airway condition.

Sit upright, breathe slowly through your nose and take small sips of water. Avoid smoke, strong fragrances and cold air if they trigger coughing. Warm fluids may soothe the throat; honey may help adults and children over one year old, but never give honey to an infant. Follow an existing inhaler plan, and do not start antibiotics or someone else’s cough medicine without advice. Note triggers, mucus, wheeze and how long episodes last.

Get urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, chest pain, coughing blood, choking, confusion or inability to speak in full sentences. Arrange prompt review for repeated coughing fits, fainting or vomiting with cough, high fever, noisy breathing, or a cough that is worsening or not settling. Children, older adults and people with lung disease may need earlier assessment.
