Post-nasal drip and snoring

Short answer
Post-nasal drip may worsen snoring by narrowing the nasal passages and drying or irritating the throat during sleep.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Mechanism
- Congestion can promote mouth breathing and throat vibration.
- Sleep warning
- Breathing pauses, gasping, and daytime sleepiness need assessment.
The connection between drainage and snoring
Mucus from the nose or sinuses can move into the throat, while congestion encourages mouth breathing. Air moving through relaxed tissues during sleep may then create the vibration known as snoring. Allergic rhinitis and chronic sinusitis can cause congestion or drainage that makes this pattern more noticeable.
Snoring can also have other contributors, including the shape of the airway, alcohol near bedtime, some medicines, and obesity. Loud snoring with witnessed breathing pauses, gasping, morning headaches, or daytime sleepiness raises concern for obstructive sleep apnoea.
Ways to reduce nighttime irritation
Treat nasal blockage according to advice from a pharmacist or clinician, and consider saline spray or a properly prepared saline rinse. Keep the bedroom free from smoke and known allergy triggers. Sleeping on your side may reduce throat vibration for some people; avoid alcohol close to bedtime if it worsens your snoring.
Keep a record of blocked-nose symptoms, drainage, snoring, and sleep quality. If weight is affecting breathing or sleep, discuss a supportive Weight Management Programme rather than trying an extreme plan. Do not assume that treating mucus alone will address breathing pauses.
When to arrange an assessment
Seek prompt medical advice if someone notices repeated pauses in your breathing, choking or gasping during sleep, or if you are very sleepy while driving or working. Urgent help is needed for severe breathing difficulty while awake, blue or grey lips, fainting, or confusion.
Arrange a routine review when snoring is persistent, newly troublesome, or accompanied by morning headaches, poor concentration, or unrefreshing sleep. A clinician can assess the nose and throat and consider Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, Chronic Sinusitis, or another cause.
Useful questions
Ask whether your congestion suggests allergy or sinus disease, whether your sleep pattern warrants testing for obstructive sleep apnoea, and which nasal treatment is safe with your other medicines. If possible, bring observations from the person who hears your snoring.

Questions people ask
Can post-nasal drip make snoring worse?
Yes. Drainage and nasal blockage can encourage mouth breathing and irritate tissues that vibrate during sleep.
Does snoring with post-nasal drip mean sleep apnoea?
Not necessarily. Breathing pauses, gasping, and marked daytime sleepiness are reasons to arrange an assessment.
